In Stepnica, it turns out that the children are very well acquainted with the first part of the Saltamontes Chronicles – “Escape from Darkness”. Thanks to their teacher, Anna Bochniarz – Mutkowska, not only do they know it inside out but they also drew some beautiful pictures to illustrate it. During our session, we talked about the characters, the storylines and the adventures in the book (with questions such as, “Why were the boys heading for Iano in Italy?”, “Why did you decide to call the dog Meatball?”), but we also discussed … motorbikes and travelling (“Where in the world have you travelled to and where would you still like to go?” and “What motorbike did you use to ride and what do you ride now?”). The children were clever, smart, and wonderful, as ever. If we hadn’t been pushed for time, we’d have happily spent a few more hours on some creative conversation, because the double period proved to be too short. A big Thank You to Ms Bochniarz – Mutkowska, the children and the Head for inviting me yesterday – and here’s to our next meeting! The atmosphere was warm and friendly, the smiles on the children’s faces priceless and the cake delicious – I’m sure to pay this place another visit (with the third part of the trilogy)
