When I meet young people, my main aim is to instil in them some self-confidence. So I didn’t tell them too much about myself; instead, I let them use their imaginations to write a story using words they’d drawn out of a hat. I also managed to combine my work with the sport that still plays a large part in my life, motorcycling. We wrote stories without racing to be first to finish but calmly ‘riding’ from beginning to end, making sure that what we wrote made sense and had style. The children came from different countries so they used English to communicate, which deserves a special mention. I’d also like to express my special appreciation to Aleksandra Rek, who works with the children on a daily basis, and Karen Sayce, whose imagination and great ideas can energise everyone, both young people and adults!
