Today, when I asked the children, ‘Who’s read my book?’ all their hands shot straight up. I don’t think there’s anything more rewarding for an author to witness than such a sea of hands. But just as priceless was seeing the happiness on children’s faces, and how they made their own artwork and films based on the Saltamontes Chronicles, and wanted to take part in a difficult quiz written by their teachers. Although my book is on a recommended book list, it’s not compulsory reading, so the most important thing for me is to see how much they wanted to and enjoyed reading it, even though they didn’t have to. I love meeting people who get inspiration from reading my books, whether it’s to create something or use in their work, and these sessions are especially meaningful. All the letters I’ve received from children are stored physically in an “enchanted” box and emotionally in my heart.
